Mikaela Mayer vs Chantelle Cameron

After an entertaining undercard, it was time for Mikaela Mayer vs Chantelle Cameron.

It was a positive opening round for Cameron (23-1, 8 KOs), who seemed to settle the quicker and find her range. Just for good measure, she left a shoulder on Mayer (22-3, 5 KOs) at the end of the first round, which the American did not like.

The Brit’s positive start continued over the next two rounds, as she appeared sharper than Mayer, who struggled to deal with the pressure from Cameron. The Brit continued to look the sharper fighter up close and at range during the fourth round. Mayer seemed to finally find her timing in the fifth, but the work rate from her opponent was still eye-catching.

Mayer had her moments over the next few rounds, but mainly with single shots, while Cameron continued to be the aggressor, varying her attacks well. After eight rounds, it felt like Mayer didn’t have the power to keep Cameron off of her, while the Brit had the power to stop Mayer in her tracks.

A nasty cut appeared around Cameron’s left eye during the ninth round. Despite that, the Brit continued to bring the pressure in the final round. It went to the judges’ scorecards, which read 97-93 x2 and 96-94 in favour of Chantelle Il Capo Cameron, who is now the unified WBA, WBC, and WBO super welterweight champion.

Caroline Dubois vs Amelia Moore

Up next was Caroline Dubois (14-0-1, 5 KOs) vs Amelia Moore (4-1, 1 KO) for Dubois’ WBC/WBO women’s lightweight title.

It was a cagey opening round, with both women looking to find their range. Dubois began to find her range in the second round, landing a well-timed straight left. Despite Moore looking mobile, trying to manage the distance, Dubois’ speed saw her have more success in the third round. A short punch in the fourth round knocked Moore down, who was visibly annoyed it was called a knockdown, seemingly saying it was a headbutt, which was difficult to tell in the moment at ringside.

The first six rounds felt like easy work for Dubois. There wasn’t much that came from Moore, while Dubois could operate almost in third gear, landing an occasional eye-catching straight right. Sweet Caroline landed a right hook in the final round, her best punch in a number of rounds. After the final bell, it was difficult to go back and think of many highlights apart from the knockdown in round four. The judges’ scored the fight 99-90 x2 and 98-91 in favour of Caroline Dubois. It wasn’t great, but the Brit remains the unified lightweight champion. After winning, Dubois was met by Alycia Baumgardner, with both engaging in a heated back and forth.

Reina Tellez vs Jessica Barry

Next on the Mikaela Mayer vs Chantelle Cameron undercard was Reina Tellez (14-1-1, 5 KOs) vs Jessica Barry (10-2, 2 KOs) in the featherweight division.

Barry had the size advantage, but Tellez drew her into the pocket and landed several eye-catching hooks. It was an entertaining second round with both having success, but the better quality and variation continued to come from Tellez.

Barry continued to show her heart and tried to fire back, but Tellez was too sharp during the first four rounds, varying her attacks impressively. Despite the passionate supporting crowd inside the bp pulse, Barry needed a big punch to change this fight.

Barry enjoyed success in the fifth round, making Tellez miss and landing eye-catching shots of her own. After numerous low blows, the referee had seen enough and took a point from Tellez in the sixth round. The seventh round was a back-and-forth one, with both fighters having their moments. There is no doubting that from the fifth round to the beginning of the eighth, the Brit had much more success.

The eighth round saw Tellez regain her strong footing in the fight, winning the key exchanges with her accuracy and variety. Barry’s bravery was commendable throughout, and she had her moments, but for me, Tellez was too sharp for the Brit. The fight went to the referee’s scorecard, which read 96-94 in favour of Tellez.

Terri Harper vs Miranda Reyes

Next up was Terri Harper (17-3-2, 7 KOs) vs Miranda Reyes (9-4-1, 3 KOs) in the super lightweight division.

Harper’s left hook landed on several occasions in the first three minutes, enough for her to take the opening round. Harper started well in the second round, scoring a knockdown, with her corner imploring her not to rush Reyes, who was ready to continue. Harper stayed poised and maintained her distance before a well-timed right hand knocked Reyes down, who made it to her feet, but the referee decided to wave the fight off. That was impressive from Harper, winning by second-round TKO.

Tysie Gallagher vs Brandi Robinson

The first fight on the Mikaela Mayer vs Chantelle Cameron main card saw Tysie Gallagher (11-2, 0 KOs) vs Brandi Robinson (5-1, 1 KO) in the super bantamweight division.

It was a quiet opening three minutes with both fighters looking to find their range. Robinson landed the best punch of the fight with a well-timed left hook. The American controlled the distance well early on and made it difficult for the Brit to land anything of note. Robinson also used her feet well in the opening rounds, making the Brit fall short.

Over the next couple of rounds, Robinson continued to be the sharper puncher, with Gallagher struggling to land anything of note. The Brit landed a good right hand right on the bell for the end of the sixth round. Gallagher enjoyed a positive end to the seventh round, but again was second to the punch for most of it.

A largely scrappy final round helped the American, who deserved the win, but the referee saw it differently and scored it 77-75 in favour of the Brit. Congratulations to Tysie, but I thought she was second best for most of that bout.

Neeraj Goyat vs Yessin Koulali

In the final fight on the Mikaela Mayer vs Chantelle Cameron prelim card, it was a 143lbs catchweight bout, with Neeraj Goyat (21-4-2, 9 KOs) facing Yessin Koulali (8-2, 3 KOs).

It was a quiet first round, with a left hand from Goyat the most notable punch. Goyat was the aggressor, mixing his attacks well, with his body punching standing out. Koulali looked comfortable on the back foot through the first few rounds, but his output didn’t seem enough.

Goyat continued to control the tempo, constantly walking down Koulali, who struggled to put together anything of note in the first five rounds, with Goyat showing good hand speed and punch selection. The fight came to a close with both swinging wildly at each other. It was an entertaining fight with Goyat the deserved 60-54 winner.

Scott Melvin vs Dylan Cheema

Scott Melvin (13-1, 3 KOs) vs Dylan Cheema (11-4, 3 KOs) was next in the super lightweight division.

Both fighters looked to establish their jabs early, but Melvin found his timing quicker and backed Cheema up with some well-timed right hands. Melvin again proved the sharper puncher throughout the second round, with Cheema having limited success. Cheema increased his work rate over the next two rounds, but the cleaner work continued to come from Melvin.

In the sixth round, the body work from Melvin paid dividends, forcing Cheema to take a knee. Despite beating the count, an impressive sustained attack followed, with the referee waving it off and saving Cheema from further punishment. An impressive TKO victory for the West Midlands fighter.

Shannon Courtenay vs Ebonie Cotton

It was the super flyweight division up next, with Shannon Courtenay (11-3-1, 4 KOs) vs Ebonie Cotton (2-2-1, 0 KOs).

It was a mostly cagey opening three minutes, with Cotton the busier of the two fighters, with Courtenay content to pick her shots more and move. Cotton continued with the pressure tactics in the second round, with Courtenay landing the cleaner shots.

Watching at ringside, I just felt the work rate from Cotton was giving her the edge in the opening four rounds, despite Courtenay being the more polished boxer. Courtenay enjoyed an impressive fifth round, landing several noteworthy punches.

Despite the pressure from Cotton, Courtenay picked her moments really well. Once the final bell rang, the cleaner work from The Baby Face Assassin in the final two rounds made the fight a lot closer in my eyes. The referee’s scorecard read 57-57, and despite the look of disbelief on Courtenay’s face, it’s impossible to argue strongly with the verdict.

Gemma Richardson vs Kirstie Bavington

Next up on the Mikaela Mayer vs Chantelle Cameron undercard was Gemma Richardson (5-0, 1 KO) vs Kirstie Bavington (10-6-2, 2 KOs) in the super lightweight division. So Solid Crew welcoming Bavington into the ring was not on my boxing bingo card!

It was a largely messy opening three minutes, with Richardson landing the cleaner punches. Richardson ended the second round impressively, landing two good shots that clearly affected Bavington.

Bavington tried to close the distance and unsettle Richardson, who constantly landed the cleaner punches throughout the first three rounds. A clearly exhausted, yet brave Bavington kept trying until the final whistle, but the cleaner shots came from Richardson, who deserved her 60-54 victory.

Brandon Bethell vs Jorge Luis Huerta

Next up on the prelims show was Brandon Bethell (8-1, 1 KO) vs Jorge Luis Huerta (4-21, 1 KO) in the super lightweight division.

Bethell started the faster, looking to work the body of Huerta immediately. Bethell continued to be the aggressor, and despite taking the odd shot, Bethell continued to land the more telling shots.

It was a strong final round from Bethell, landing some eye-catching body shots. It felt like he didn’t quite have enough power to get Huerta out of there, but it was a good performance nonetheless. The referee’s scorecard read 60-54 in favour of the Wolverhampton fighter, much to the delight of his passionate fans inside the bp pulse.

Hamza Uddin vs Jemsi Kibazange

The first fight on the Mikaela Mayer vs Chantelle Cameron card was in the super flyweight division, with Hamza Uddin (7-0, 4 KOs) vs Jemsi Kibazange (22-16-4, 8 KOs).

It was an impressive opening round from Uddin, who quickly got into his groove, mixing his punches impressively and changing his levels. Both fighters took exception to punches after the bell in the first round. A mere few seconds into this fight, it was apparent this was a warm-up fight.

A flurry of well-placed shots came in the second round, with Uddin showcasing his fast hand speed. Another attack soon followed, with the massively overmatched Kibazange taking a knee and the referee waving the fight off. A chance for Uddin to blow the cobwebs off, and he did so impressively, winning by second-round TKO.
