Raven Chapman Seriously Injured In Sparring Against Dina Thorslund

By Per-Åke Persson

Sometime in July Raven Chapman arrived in Denmark to spar with Dina Thorslund, who was in training for a big fight against Cherneka Johnson August 8.

On July 24 Chapman suffered what was diagnosed as a brain hematoma with cerebral edema and underwent immediate surgery after being airlifted to hospital (which indicates that the local hospital couldn’t handle the injuries). The procedure stopped the bleeding and stabilized the swelling. Chapman was then placed into a medically induced coma. Her team, Vote Boxing, writes that she has been taken off sedatives and is continuing to receive treatment while awaiting medically supervised repatriation to the UK for further treatment and rehabilitation.

It should be noted that it wasn’t until yesterday, August 4, that the news about Chapman’s life threatening injuries reach media.

As for Dina Thorslund, she has continued preparations for her fight against Cherneka Johnson and is now in Orlando getting ready for the fight. How Chapman’s injury has affected her is not known but it may play a part in her performance even though she is determined to go through with the fight against Johnson.

“I did not pull out of the fight against Johnson because Raven is a real fighter and I know she would have wanted me to go out there and win,” states Dina Thorslund on Instagram.
